We've already told you that our family never does anything the way other people do it. Lindemans Kriek is a good example of this.
To create a beer like no other, we've been adding whole cherries to our lambic for generations.
Our encounter with American importer Charles Finkel in the 1970s revolutionized the fruit beer segment. Charles convinced us to export our old kriek to the United States by boat. What we hadn't considered was that the movement of the waves would reactivate the fermentation process and cause the corks to explode during the journey. It was like something out of The Adventures of Tintin. To prevent this from happening, we developed an alternative production method for our kriek. We use fresh, unsweetened, non-concentrated cherry juice, which we blend with lambic that's at least a year old before fermenting and macerating for up to three days and pasteurizing the entire batch. This prevents the corks from exploding.
Thanks to the use of juice and pasteurization, this kriek is sweeter and fruitier than the Oude Kriek Cuvée René, which undergoes a second fermentation process in the bottle. Thanks to its innovative flavor, it was a resounding success both here in Belgium and around the world. Today, it is undoubtedly the go-to wine for consumers.
